This is a device for Data Acquisition (DAQ), which means it can collect, review, send and make decision based on in/out coming data. The micro controller found on the board (black rectangular block with pins coming out,see picture below) make it possible to store a certain data manipulation design on it. It means it can operate according to the program you wrote on the chip, without being connected to you computer.

The great advantage of Arduino concept, is that it is fully open source. It is possible to share your particular design of a project and discuss it online with other fellow enthusiasts. You can create and experiment with new or already existing projects and post them online to receive feedback.
